I Love Autumn.

There’s nothing like Autumn in the wine country. Crisp, cool air, vineyards filled with harvest workers, soft warm sweaters, the drizzle of rain and the anticipaiton of the first cozy fire in the wood stove.

It’s also the time we bring out the scarecrow.

I made him using an old pair of overalls, when overalls were still being sold as fashionable. His legs are filled with a long piece of scrap foam-rubber folded in half and stuffed into my husband’s thrown-out work boots. His torso is a pillow and an old, orange life-vest inside a flannel shirt I confiscated from my husband’s closet. His head is a pillowcase filled with plastic grocery bags and his eyes are black coat buttons, and another long button for his nose. His straw hat is sewn on. I used a beefy but bendable wire threaded through the shirt to create his bending arms. One which waves with the breeze and one that is secured to the mailbox. I tucked some straw into the appropriate places and finished him off with some faux oak leaves.

We enjoy bringing him down from his year-long home in the barn and wheeling him down the driveway in the wheelbarrow to his seasonal perch at the entrance to our property. These photos are a few years old, and now I have a black crow that is wired to his shoulder. We live just over a small hill and our scarecrow still makes my heart skip a beat at night when I crest the hill and my headlights hit him. We’ll be bringing him out the fist week of October, because nothing says welcome to Autumn to me more than him.

Homemade Halloween No. 1

It’s never too early to start thinking about Halloween Costumes. I’ve made a lot of my kid’s costumes over the years (and a few for Jeff and I too) so I thought I would pass on a little inspiration.
Now that my son has reached Junior High, full-on costumes aren’t as cool as they used to be. Last year, we created this Tattoo Artist costume with nothing more than a plain white tee-shirt, ink-jet iron-on transfer paper printed with a graphic I designed and some sharpie pens. (FREE graphic below!)

For angelic Sarah, I had her lie down on satin fabric folded in half at the shoulders and traced around her (patterns scare me) adding long length to the arm area and flared out towards the hem to make a simple robe. Cut out the neck area and ok, I got a little fancy with the collar thing, but it’s not altogether necessary. Tied her up with satin rope and added purchased wings and halo ($16, eBay). And Jamie’s was the least expensive, obviously. She just wore her daddy’s old turn-outs!

If you need a T-shirt tattoo image, you are welcome to use the one I designed (for personal use only please, no resale.) Simply click on the image to get to the larger size and drag it off the blog and onto your desktop or into a file. It is already reversed for printing on Avery transfer iron-on transfer paper and there’s a smaller one for the back of the neck or sleeve. Enjoy.

You’re So Nice.

I must be doing something right. I receive some of the nicest comments on my blog. My readers -when I say that I pretend that I’m a syndicated columnist- are the best there is. I have NEVER received anything even close to negative, ever, on my blog. Today has been especially nice, and it merits a double posting. So this post is to tell you all how much I appreciate you and to thank you for taking the time to not only visit, but to leave the occasional pleasantries that keep me smiling and blogging daily.

I visited one of my reader’s blogs today and was so taken by the darling picture of her little 2 year old with her head wrapped up in a pink bath towel, that I had to leave her a comment. She in return sent me a lovely email. I was inspired to give her the very first JSIM You’re So Nice tag that I just made. Kristen, I hope you’ll take this tag and pass it on when you feel as moved by a lovely gesture made by one of your blog readers. I hope this tag goes on forever and a day.

This tag is also free for the taking for any of my blog readers to pass on as they wish. Have fun and thank someone for making your day! Simply drag the graphic above off onto your desktop or into a file for uploading as needed.
