Watch Case Pendant: Cigar Label

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I picked up a few goodies at the Alameda Flea Market. One find was a box of 10 old watch cases minus any glass fronts. I had experimented with Amazing Glaze Embossing Powder in the past and thought these cases would be great to fill and wear. As always, click on images to greatly enlarge.
I dug through my vintage cigar label collection and found an embossed, regal-design label that I knew I could get two interesting sections from. I traced the areas to cut and trimmed out the pieces.
Using Mod Podge, I glued the bottom graphic into the case and allowed to dry. Then following the directions that came with the Amazing Glaze, I partially filled the case with embossing powder and baked in my counter-top oven. It took around 8-10 minutes to completely melt the powder. There were a few obvious bubbles when it cooled, so I baked it again and they greatly minimized. Then when the first layer was cool, I glued in the second layer, dried, covered with powder and baked again.

I was pretty happy with the results of this one, the shadowing from the layering is pretty neat, and by using the original label, the embossed paper adds a seriously cool touch.Link

I was simultaneously working on another larger and deeper watch case, the bottom one in the stack. It was filled with almost 1/2″ worth of powder. I had a terrible time with bubbles and cracking and even though reheating seemed to help a bit, in the end, the acrylic turned dark brownish-yellow and leaked through the cracks of the back watch part opening. That piece was a total loss. So in the end, I would recommend sticking with the thinnest layers possible, not overheating (which created discoloring), and if your image is precious, be sure to use a copy.

Alameda Flea Market

Today is my friend Rose’s birthday and we spent most of it at the Alameda Point Flea Market. If you live in Northern California, you’ve probably heard of the Alameda Flea Market or been there yourself. It’s open the first Sunday of every month and there were more seller spaces than we could possibly hit in a day. I takes us just over an hour to get there from Petaluma and today was the perfect day for a market. The sun was shining bright and we were down to t-shirts by the end of our venture. I didn’t buy more than I could carry in a couple of totes, I’ll show some of those items soon. I did have the best time visiting with different sellers and taking pictures of their goods. If you are one of the sellers I met today and are visiting my blog for the first time, WELCOME!! Be sure to comment on this post about your stuff and give your store info if you have one!
Click photos to enlarge!I bought a pair of painted metal mallards for the wall of my son’s hunting lodge, aka: his bedroom. And there’s a fabulous bronze stag statue I couldn’t afford.

How amazing is this piece- a row of patina’d doll head molds. Only $2000.

I couldn’t resist snapping a shot at these girls with their big find, a vintage mounted deer head! I bought that 50s infielder’s glove for my daughter’s baseball mitt collection. How lucky was I that the seller had the history/story to go with it! And there are food vendors as far as the eye can see, but never enough seating for eating, this group of friends found their own solution using their recent purchase of vintage occasional tables. It was a great day with a great friend, lots of new acquaintances, many old acquaintances and bags of goodies to go through in the morning, and no sunburned nose, THIS TIME I finally remembered the sunscreen!

Tracing: Adobe Illustrator CS3

Do you read your software manual? I rarely do. I have learned Adobe Illustrator from years of working with it, tips someone’s given me, the occasional online tutorial, etc. I even took a Photoshop class at the junior college (well, partially took…) and learned so much more about Adobe Illustrator just from learning about Photoshop tools. I seldom EVER use Photoshop, usually just PS Elements for cropping photos. For some reason, I’m a little nervous about trying new things in software, I get comfortable in what I know and rarely click on mysterious menu items.

Well, the other day I was vector tracing a graphic I had scanned in black and white and realized there was a color option in tracing. So I got up the nerve, found a photo/graphic I had used on my blog in the past and tried it out. WOW! Here’s the result! You’ll have to click on the image to get the whole effect. I’ll definitely have to try this more often, what a great tool for a non-Photoshopper. Here’s the link to the previous post with that photo.
