Spool Advent Calendar Kits

Last year I posted a project for making Christmas Advent calendars from vintage wooden spools. Spools work great for writing messages, verses, or clues to where to discover hidden treats. And Advent calendars aren’t limited to just those with children, several JSIM readers mentioned sharing them with their significant others. This year, I thought it would be fun to take that project to another level by creating Christmas Spool Advent Calendar Kits! Here are some freebies to get you going: PDF files of labeling sheets for kit packaging, numbered wrapping labels for the spools and an illustrated instruction sheet (which you can alter to your own style of instructions if they differ) to include in your kits. (Click on each image to download file.)

I made four Christmas Spool Advent Calendar Kits today with spools I’d been collecting here and there. It takes 24 spools to make one Avent calendar. I find them mostly at thrift stores, but they can be found online and you can also make kits with new wooden spools found in the wood-craft section of most craft stores. Print one sheet each of the numbered wraps and packaging graphics per kit. I printed the packaging labels to full sheet self-adhesive label stock so there was no gluing needed. Print one sheet of instructions for every two Advent Kit sets as there are two per sheet. I cut apart the sheets and rolled the spool wraps and instructions together.I took apart my dollar-store wooden garland for its beads and packaged one bead per spool plus an extra bead, just in case. Of course, you can add 2 beads per pack, or more. I placed them all into coin envelopes, labeled and sealed with sections from the packaging label file. In lieu of envelopes, you can use plastic supply zip-bags, muslin bags, even string them into a loop.Using one additional large vintage wooden spool per kit, I wound enough Divine Twine on each to string all of the Advent spools into ornaments. Be certain that your string and beads are size compatible and will thread easily.I used basic brown paper lunch bags to hold the kit supplies, but you can use just about any container, such as pencil boxes, tins, take-out containers, fabric bags, etc.Once all my pieces were assembled, I placed the spools, twine, beads and rolled instructions & number wraps in each bag and sealed with a strip of decorative “tape” cut from the packaging graphics. I labeled with the main graphic and used a blank label to write on. You can include a glue stick or tape and a list of daily treat ideas or include them in your kit as well. (You can find several ideas listed in this Advent Calendar post.)Now they are all ready to send to my little nieces and nephews far away. Remember- Advent calendars start on December 1st, so chop-chop!

ART et STYLE: French Magazine Cover

Thursdays with Selena usually end in Selena sharing some fantastic goodies with me. Last week she gave me this gorgeous 1940s French magazine that she’d picked up knowing I would love the beautiful vintage graphics. Was she right! How could I resist but to share the images with you? Click on the front and back (modified) cover images below to snag the free JPG files. These would make gorgeous leather cuffs & keychains for Christmas gifts or section apart for a lovely background image for your blog header or digital collage.

Christmas Stamp Embossed Ornament

Since the release of my new Pink Persimmon stamp designs yesterday, I couldn’t resist crafting a bit more with the Merry Christmas Tree Stamp. I ran by the craft store yesterday and found this really fun product called Pluffy. A lightweight foam product that claims to stay soft and never dry out, or you can bake it to keep forever. It worked perfectly for creating a beautiful Christmas tree ornament.

UPDATE: As of 2014 these rubber stamps are no longer available. I hope you will be inspired by the techniques to create your own unique ornament with other rubber stamps available on the market.

I rolled out some white Pluffy to about 3/16″ thick onto the back of a foil lined baking sheet that fits into my toaster oven. I sprayed my Merry Christmas Tree clear stamp with silicone spray to keep it from sticking to the foam then pressed it into the Pluffy. Be certain to clean your stamp well after using silicone spray before using again with ink.Using a sharp knife, I trimmed the foam into a tree shape. I bent my metal ruler and pressed into the foam to achieve the curved bottom, as demonstrated by my lovely assistant/daughter, Sarah.

I baked as directed, making it not quite hard, but slightly flexible and dry. Once cool, I trimmed the edges round with scissors then punched a hole into the top with my 1/8″ hole punch. This stuff is really fun and easy to work with!  Sarah mentioned it reminded her of projects done on her favorite cake TV shows using Marzipan.I gave it a few coats of Sterling Silver spray paint. {UPDATE: I have learned since origianally sharing this post that a first coat of Kilz spray primer BEFORE using spray paint is essential in sealing the dry Pluffy allowing the silver paint to dry.}I strung a bow made of repurposed gift-box  ribbon into the hole at the top. Then I went outside to decorate a section of the evergreen in my front yard as my curious neighbors looked on.The paint is still soft to the touch, so I recommend a drying time of a few days before handling the ornaments much. If you make one and you leave the back white, you can write a timely sentiment to give as a gift.If you haven’t already, be sure to enter the Cathe Holden/Pink Persimmon Christmas Stamp Pack Giveaway!
