D. Lawless Hardware: A Craft & DIY Resource

Many of you are using your creativity to turn thrifted furniture finds into fabulous home furnishings with the latest trends in chalk and milk paint techniques, and then finishing off with new hardware. There are many choices in DIY paints, but there’s a good chance you’ve limited yourself to only the knobs and pulls you can find at the hardware store. Maybe you use hardware in your craft projects and feel limited as well. Well, have I got a great source for you for new and vintage-inspired hardware and embellshements: D. Lawless Hardware!

cathe-holden-dlawless-01I discovered D. Lawless Hardware well before starting my craft blog in 2008 when I was selling vintage goods at local antiques collectives. I purchased vintage-style glass knobs and pulls in various colors at wholesale pricing from D. Lawless to resell, and to use for restoring old furniture that I sold. You can see the hardware in candy jars in this old photo I dug up of my space back then. The glass knobs and pulls were some of my most popular items and it looks like a few had nearly sold out!cathe-holden-dlawless-04Fast forward to my new adventures in crafting and organizing, and I’m not only using them in my personal craft projects but as materials and embellishments in class kits for projects that I teach. Below is my cigar box collection at it’s height (I’ve whittled it down substantially) Most all are finished with D. Lawless Hardware brass label holders, attached with tiny screws, for marking their contents. To the right is a mini mock-cigar-box cabinet project I designed and taught in workshops using their brass label holders with pulls.cathe-holden-dlawless-07 D. Lawless Hardware generously sponsored my recent presentation of Creative Keeping at the Pinner’s Conference in Salt Lake City with packs of label holder hardware for all attendees. If you received a pack we’d love to know how you used yours!cathe-holden-dlawless-09I will always use label holders for organizing my studio, and in my collage, assemblage, and mixed media crafts.cathe-holden-dlawless-05Besides knobs and label holders, D. Lawless Hardware carries a fantastic assortment of hooks. You can find the same iron coat hook in their online store that I feature and gold-leaf in one of my Inspired Barn Home Decor videos.cathe-holden-dlawless-08If you like to embellish your furniture pieces or create assemblage projects, you’ll appreciate the trunk and jewelry box parts. And their massive assortment of wood appliques and trims just might rock your world. This is only a small sampling:cathe-holden-dlawless-10The DLawlessHardware.com offers many more products including materials, tools, and a few interesting things that just might surprise you! It’s also a great resource for putting together gift sets for other do-it-yourself enthusiasts. Take a look at all they have to offer and come back to share what your favorite pieces are!

Shutterfly iPhone Case Designs and GIVEAWAY!

Last year this time I designed a custom Shutterfly iPhone cover utilizing my stash of vintage ephemera. I was absolutely thrilled by the results and quality of the product, shown HERE, and it has been on my phone since the moment I received it. I’ve been through many iPhone covers over the years, but the Shutterfly case with liner is by far my favorite. After one full year of use it doesn’t have a scratch on it.Cathe_Holden_iPhone_Shutterfly_03 The case has protected my iPhone well, as there’s not one bit of damage to it from the many, many drops it’s experienced. I especially like having a beautiful, custom design on something I carry around all day long. Shutterfly has always been known for quality products you can customize with your own photographs and their selection of designs. I because I love collaging with vintage ephemera I’ve collected over the years, I especially enjoy the ability to add my digital collage designs to something I carry with me every day.Cathe-Holden-3-iPhone-Cases Now you can enjoy a vintage collage design on your iPhone like I do! I have created six different case graphics for the most popular brand and size smart phones- iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The designs are available in my Etsy shop for only $6 each, with instructions in the listings for uploading, personalizing and ordering your own case from Shutterfly.com. The examples below show my and my husband’s names as examples only. The designs purchased will have blank fields for adding your own custom text.Cathe-Holden-iPhone-Designs-6There are three feminine designs, and three that are a bit more masculine with hunting and farm themes that make awesome gifts for the men in your life. Five of the designs allow for adding your own custom text once purchased and uploaded to Shutterfly.com. Here is one where the name (I used my husband’s in the example below) blends nicely into the design (right), or can be ordered without personalizing as well (left).Cathe-Holden-iPhone-DecoyXXThe printing of the designs wrap around to the sides of the case, and the matte finish is soft and beautiful and shows off the design in incredible detail. Here is the lovely new wardrobe for my iPhone 6s:Cathe-Holden-iPhone-Case-Poppies Cathe-Holden-iPhone-Case-Inspected Cathe-Holden-iPhone-Case-BirdsAs you can see, the personalizing option can be used for name, monogram, even website address. Shutterfly offers a multitude of fonts, sizes, and colors for text.

Thankful Box: Retreat & Repost

Today I am heading to Occidental, California for another lovely retreat with lovely women at the Lydia House at St. Dorothy’s Rest. No assigned projects, no schedule, just bring whatever you want to craft or work on if at all. We watch movies by a large fireplace, read, eat and drink until we are merry, laugh A LOT, and just embrace the time away from the everyday, including wifi.Holden-Lydia-House About this time of year I remind you to get working on a Thanksgiving Journal to pass around your holiday table. But before I unplug, I want to share this simple and fun project that I designed a few years ago and I still adore, the Thankful Box.Guests can each receive a note card to write on and tuck into the box. This might be better received than passing a book as guests may be apt to write more if they know their thoughts aren’t being passed around all day.

For this template I used images from two very old trade cards in my ephemera stash.Click on the images below to download the box template and note cards. Print to cardstock. Assemble the box using the directions found in the original message box post.Print multiples of the cards if needed, trim and share with your family and other guests. Make extra sets to share with friends or as a host gift.
